In the postwar period， many people from China migrated to Taiwan. Zuoying became one of the main gathering centers of military villages in Kaohsiung City. At that time， the quarters for military dependants were characteristically sheltered with bamboo fencing， which， in an ambiguous way， isolated the military families from the outside world. Thus， people outside of the military quarters began to call the places- "villages". The Kaohsiung Museum of Military Dependants Village was set up to preserve the culture of the bamboo fences. It is a treasure box containing the memories of the military dependant villages in history.
