Kaohsiung City has both a New and Old Confucius Temple. The Old Confucius Temple was built in 1684 by the first magistrate of Fongshan, Yang Fang-sheng. Due to natural disasters and damage it has been rebuilt a number of times. It reached the peak of its development around the end of the 19th Century. It was seriously neglected during the Japanese Colonial era, leaving only the "Chongsheng Shrine". This is now a Class 3 Building of Historical Interest and has been preserved within the Chiu-Cheng Elementary School grounds. The New Confucius Temple was completed in 1976 with an area of 1,800m2. The temple is built reflecting the style of the Sung dynasty Shandong Cyufu Confucius Temple, which includes the Wanren Wall, Companion Pool and Bridge, Minlun Hall, Li Gate, Yilu House, Lingsing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, Dongsi Chamber and Chongsheng Shrine. The Tacheng Hall that forms the main building imitates the Taihe Hall from the Forbidden City in Beijing. It is a magnificent structure that conveys the full majesty and wisdom of the old Confucian philosophy. The Chinese people consider Confucius to be the greatest teacher ever. September 28th is Teacher's Day, which marks Confucius' birthday. It is celebrated with a solemn ceremony conducted according to ancient rituals.
