The old town gates in Zuoying were Taiwan's first fortified township gates, which were built from stone and clay. Zuoying was established in 1825 and was incorporated into Fongshan County during the Ching Dynasty. The former county once covered the area of what is now Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The North, East and South Gates as well as part of the town's walls have survived. They have been preserved by Zuoying District Administration and turned into a location of national historical interest. Photos:
