Wulai Atayal Museum

Phone:886-2-29603456 Address:233 12, Wulai street, Wulai Village, Wulai District, New Taipei City
Wulai is the only place where visitors to Taipei can get to know the aboriginal culture. This museum presents Atayal's history and traditional customs, including facial tattoos. In previous times, a facial tattoo was a very important rite of passage to adulthood for young Atayal girls, who had to be able to knit before this ritual could be performed for them. In addition, only girls with a tattoo on their face would receive marriage proposals. Visitors can buy some decorative souvenirs and knitwear in traditional styles at the handicraft center in the museum.
