Permission to build Zhang's Monument Gateway next to the Wan-nian Bridge to honor Zhang Zao-niang, wife of Zheng Yong-jin, was granted in 1866. The gateway was finished in 1871. Zhang Zao-niang married Zheng Yong-jin in 1820 after his first wife passed away. After he died, Zhang took care of her in-laws and brought up three children on her own. She remained a widow for 49 years until she died in 1877 at the age of 79. This gateway has four pillars, three gates and three stories. Entirely made of high quality stone imported from Quanzhou, it is 18 feet tall and16 feet wide, with proportions that are wider and shorter than most gateways. Its upturned eaves are its most salient feature.
