During the Japanese era, Taiwan was divided administratively into cities, streets and villages. In 1920, The Hsinchu Street Affairs Office was established, which was upgraded to the Hsinchu City Affairs Office in 1930. The office was similar to the city government today. After World War II, the building served for a time as the office of the KMT's Hsinchu chapter. This two-story red brick structure is a rectangular-shaped building with two dormer windows on its hip roof. In the middle of the front side of the building is a portico with an arched doorway. The keystone above the doorway and the wheat grain shaped ornamentation impart a sense of power. The building will be the site of Hsinchu City Fine Arts Museum in the future.
