With more than a century of history behind it, Pinglin Old Street manages to preserve its down-to-earth feel, largely because many of the area's oldest residents still call it home. Several traditional stone houses line the street, with the building materials originally chiseled away from large boulders found in the Beishi River. Tourists love to admire the beauty found in the older styles of architecture, and during their visit they take advantage of the many stores selling local products and everyday goods. Besides Pinglin's famed Pouchong tea, storeowners make traditional goods like pressed tea seed oil and tea soap. Finally, no journey to this historical street is complete without visiting the Baoping Temple, one of the street's oldest buildings. Built in 1862 it remains a main worship center for locals, and in the town's early days it served as the focal point of development for Pinglin Old Street.
