In 1911, the richest man in Kaohsiung, Mr. Chen Jhong-He, built a Western style terrace where the hospital stands today. It was completed in 1920 (nine years later) and was built in a European Renaissance style. However, the symmetrical layout of the main hall and patient's wards resemble traditional Taiwanese hospitals. His house was the first private Western residence in Kaohsiung. His descendants funded renovations as a way of commemorating their ancestor's pioneering spirit. The building was then named Chen Jhong-He Memorial Hall and is now open to the public. Inside the museum are displays of historical artifacts from the Chen family. Photos:
