From the 60's to the 80's Yenchengpu was to Kaohsiung, as Ximending was to Taipei, everyone knew the Yencheng Jyuejiang Shopping Area. The center previously specialized in imported goods and was the city's hottest shopping spot. It also catered to foreign sailors and provided a great nightlife, with variety of pubs. As the shopping area began to move eastward, the region began to go into decline. Residents and business owners began to voice their concern on the matter. Retailers and Kaohsiung City Government have recently worked together to restore the public facilities and the shopping area. The district now has a whole new appearance and has been improved greatly. Like a phoenix reborn from the ashes, the Yencheng Jyuejiang Shopping Area is gradually regaining its old prosperity.
