First Hospital in Taiwan with Western Medicine FacilitiesHuwei Mackay Hospital is the first western medicine hospital in Taiwan. Dr. Mackay established the hospital in 1879. It was the most advanced hospital at the time and marked the beginning of modern medicine in Taiwan. Designed by the doctor himself, the hospital is a fusion of the East and West, a western-style residence in Taiwan. All the original furniture and equipments have been preserved. A more modern Mackay Hospital was later established and the original Hobe Mackay Hospital was named a historical site. The building has left us many records of the past—in the form of stories or actual objects—and this is a golden opportunity to see them first-hand.
