Sinlau Hospital is the first Western hospital in Taiwan, and it was established by Dr. James L. Maxwell, M.D (1836-1921) in 1865. He also created Thaipengkeng Maxwell Memorial Church and Tainan Theological College and Seminary, in turn exerting a profound influence on missionary work and Taiwan's medical history during the early years. Sinlau Hospital created the Maxwell Medical Museum in his honor; the museum collection comprises of relics of early missionaries, medical apparatuses and old photos.
